(1) Used as deoxidizer
Steel has strict requirements on oxygen content, generally no more than 0.02%, or even more stringent. Therefore, excess oxygen is removed during the steelmaking process. Manganese is a reactive metal and its chemical properties are more reactive than iron. When manganese is added to molten steel, manganese will react with ferrous oxide to form oxidized slag that is insoluble in molten steel. The oxidized slag floats on the surface of molten steel and reduces the oxygen content in the steel.
(2) Used as desulfurized
Sulfur is present in molten steel in the form of iron sulfide. The high sulfur content in steel can easily cause thermal embrittlement and reduce the mechanical properties of steel. Therefore, the sulfur content should be controlled during the steelmaking process. The binding force between manganese and sulfur is greater than the binding force between iron and sulfur. After adding manganese alloy, it is easy to generate high melting point manganese sulfide together with the manganese in the molten steel and convert it into slag, thereby reducing the sulfur content in the steel and improving the forgeability and rollability of the steel.
(3)As an alloying element
Manganese can strengthen ferrite and refine pearlite, improving the strength, hardenability, hardness, and wear resistance of steel so that it can become an important alloy element of various steels. For example, if 0.8%-1.7% manganese is added to low alloy steel, the strength of the steel can be increased by 20%-30% compared to ordinary carbon steel.
