In the presence of iron in the electric furnace, coke is used to reduce phosphorus pentoxide in apatite to obtain both phosphorus and iron phosphorus. In order to make the smelting process proceed smoothly, in addition to apatite, coke and steel scraps, an appropriate amount of silica needs to be added to the furnace charge. The requirements for these raw materials are: apatite containing more than 25% P2O5, less than 50% CaO, and more than 80% with a particle size of 5-40mm; Coke: more than 78% fixed carbon, with a particle size of 2-5mm; Steel scraps: no non-ferrous Metal inclusions, length less than 100mm; silica: containing more than 96% SiO2, particle size 5-40mm; all input charges should be dry, and the moisture should be less than 2%.

 

Ferrophosphorus is used as an additive for phosphorus in steelmaking and casting. When using phosphorus-containing steel plates, adhesion between steel plates can be prevented. Adding an appropriate amount of phosphorus during rolling production can improve its fluidity and avoid surface cracks. When producing high-phosphorus wear-resistant cast iron, phosphorus forms a uniform binary eutectic structure in the casting. Due to the high hardness of the phosphorus eutectic, an appropriate amount of phosphorus is added to the truck brake shoes to improve its wear resistance. The phosphorus used in casting can improve the fluidity of cast iron, thereby improving the quality of castings. Currently, phosphorus iron is mostly used in the foundry industry.

 

Ferrophosphate is a by-product of yellow phosphorus production. Exports have surged in recent years. With the increase in export volume, foreign companies' quality requirements for ferrophosphorus are also constantly increasing. Now the requirements for low-titanium ferrophosphorus are getting higher and higher, requiring the titanium content to be less than 2% or even lower. Less than 1%, generally the titanium content in ferrophosphorus is 0.3% to 2%.

 

Although phosphorus is sometimes regarded as an undesirable element, for some special steels or castings, appropriate phosphorus content can improve wear resistance.
