Raw material preparation:

Ferro silicon is a ferroalloy, which means it is an alloy made up primarily of iron (Fe) and silicon (Si). It is produced by smelting a mixture of iron ore, coke (a form of carbon), and silica (SiO2) in an electric arc furnace. The reaction that takes place during the smelting process is as follows:

 

2Fe2O3 + 3SiO2 + 6C → 4Fe + 3SiO2 + 6CO

 

In this reaction, iron oxide (Fe2O3) from the iron ore is reduced to iron (Fe) by the carbon (C) from the coke, while silica (SiO2) is reduced to silicon (Si). The resulting mixture, containing mostly iron and silicon, is then solidified into large blocks or granules, which are commonly known as ferro silicon.
