Ferrosilicon production conditions
Smelting ferrosilicon must meet the following two most basic conditions: a place with strong environmental purification ability (also allowed to produce mild pollution sources); ② abundant low-cost power supply, because silicon smelting is a high-energy-consuming industry. Taking industrial silicon as an example, the average power consumption per ton of finished product is 12,000 degrees, and usually only cheap hydropower (ranging from RMB per degree) can be used as production energy. Due to heavy pollution and high energy consumption, silicon smelting enterprises can only be distributed in remote areas with abundant hydropower (some with abundant thermal power), and due to power shortages, they often reduce or stop production due to power restrictions during the dry season.
Smelting any kind of silicon product must involve ore (containing SiO2) as a raw material. Mining will destroy forests and vegetation. At the same time, the smelting process will also produce a lot of pollution (such as CO, excessive dust, etc.), which belongs to the metallurgical industry that consumes resources, is highly polluting, and has low technical content. Therefore, developed countries generally do not produce it and mainly rely on imports. Due to the wide range of uses of silicon products (automotive industry, information industry), its largest consumers are developed countries and regions. Therefore, most of the silicon products produced in developing countries, in addition to their own consumption, are exported in exchange for foreign exchange.
