The main uses of magnesium metal:

 

It is used as an alloying element in the production of magnesium alloys, as a component of aluminum alloys in die casting, for sulfur removal in steel production, and in the production of titanium in the Kroll process.

 

As an additive in conventional propellants and in the production of spheroidal graphite in cast iron.

 

As a reducing agent for the production of uranium and other metals from uranium and other metal salts.

 

Acts as a sacrificial (galvanic cell) anode to protect underground tanks, pipelines, buried structures, and water heaters.
