Metal silicon is a trade name that emerged in the mid-1960s. Metallic silicon is a product smelted from quartz and coke in an electric furnace. The main component silicon content is about 98%.
Silicon is the eighth most common element in the universe by mass. Most silicon is used commercially without being separated, often with very little processing of the natural minerals. Such use includes industrial construction with clays, silica sand, and stone. Silicon is the basis of the widely used synthetic polymers called silicones.
