Silicon metal production process
Raw Materials: Quartz (SiO₂) and carbon reductants (coal, coke, wood chips).
Submerged Arc Furnace (SAF) Smelting:
Quartz and carbon are heated to 1,800–2,000°C in an electric furnace.
Reaction: SiO₂ + 2C → Si + 2CO.
Refining: Slag removal and chemical purification for high-purity grades.
Casting: Molten silicon is cooled and crushed into commercial sizes.
Global Consumption
Worldwide silicon metal consumption is estimated at 4.2–4.5 million tons in 2024, up 8% YoY. Growth drivers include:
Solar Energy: Polysilicon demand for 300+ GW solar installations.
EVs: Aluminum-silicon alloys for lightweight vehicle frames.
