Silicon nitride is an inorganic substance with the chemical formula Si3N4. It is an important structural ceramic material. Silicon nitride has extremely high hardness, with a Mohs hardness of 9, second only to a few superhard materials such as diamond. At the same time, its strength is also very high, with a room temperature bending strength of up to 980MPa, comparable to alloy steel, and the strength can be maintained at 1200℃ without decreasing. Silicon nitride has excellent thermal stability, with a melting point of up to 1900℃, and remains stable when heated to 1450~1550℃ in air. In addition, it also has good thermal shock resistance and can withstand rapid temperature changes without breaking. The chemical properties of silicon nitride are very stable. Except for hydrofluoric acid, it does not react with other inorganic acids, does not wet a variety of non-ferrous metal melts (especially aluminum liquid), and can withstand the erosion of many organic substances.

There are many methods for synthesizing silicon nitride, including carbothermal reduction, chemical vapor deposition, sol-gel method, etc. Among them, carbothermal reduction is the most cost-effective means for industrially manufacturing silicon nitride powder.

Silicon nitride can be used to manufacture cutting tools and wear-resistant parts such as bearings, balls, and mechanical seals. Silicon nitride is used to manufacture engine parts, turbine blades, and other parts that work in high-temperature environments. Silicon nitride materials are used in engine parts such as turbocharger rotors, bearings, and valves to improve engine efficiency and durability. Silicon nitride is used as corrosion-resistant and high-temperature resistant reactor parts, pump parts, and valves, suitable for corrosive environments such as strong acids and strong alkalis. Silicon nitride can be used as a thermal diffusion barrier, electrical insulation layer, and mechanical support structure in semiconductor processing due to its good electrical insulation and thermal stability. Silicon nitride is used as an insulating material in integrated circuits and a structural material for micromechanical systems. Silicon nitride is used to manufacture medical devices such as artificial joints and scalpels due to its biocompatibility and wear resistance. Silicon nitride can be used in optical coatings such as anti-reflective coatings due to its good optical transparency and environmental resistance.
