Ferrovanadium is an important alloy additive in the steel industry. Vanadium increases the strength, toughness, ductility and heat resistance of steel. Since the 1960s, the use of vanadium in the steel industry has increased dramatically, accounting for 85% of vanadium consumption by 1988.
The consumption ratio of vanadium in steel is 20% for carbon steel, 25% for high-strength low alloy steel, 20% for alloy steel, and 15% for tool steel. Vanadium-containing high-strength low-alloy steel (HSLA) is widely used in the production and construction of oil/gas pipelines, buildings, bridges, rails, pressure vessels, carriage frames, etc. due to its high strength. The application scope of various vanadium-containing steels is getting wider and wider, and relevant talents are becoming more and more important.
Metal vanadium is mainly used in non-ferrous alloys to produce vanadium-titanium alloys, such as Ti-6Al-4V, Ti-6Al-6V-2Sn and Ti-8Al-1V-Mo. Ti-6Al-4V alloy is an excellent high-temperature structural material used to manufacture aircraft and rockets. It is highly valued in the United States, and its output accounts for more than half of titanium-based vanadium alloys.
Metal vanadium can also be used in magnetic materials, cast iron, cemented carbide, superconducting materials and nuclear reactor materials.
