Electrolytic manganese metal is produced by acid-leaching manganese ore to extract manganese salts, followed by electrolysis to obtain the metal. It has an iron-like appearance, existing as strong, brittle, irregular flakes, with one side shiny and the other rough. Its color varies from silver to brown, and when processed into powder, it turns silver-gray. It readily oxidizes in air, dissolves in dilute acid while releasing hydrogen, and can decompose water to release hydrogen at slightly elevated temperatures.
