Ferromanganese is divided into low carbon ferromanganese, medium carbon ferromanganese and high carbon ferromanganese: generally, low carbon ferromanganese contains 80% manganese, 0.4%-0.7% carbon, 75%-78% medium carbon ferromanganese, 1.5%-2.0% carbon, 65%-75% high carbon ferromanganese and 5-10% carbon.

Ferromanganese is an iron alloy composed of manganese and iron, which has active chemical properties. When it is added to molten steel, it can form oxide slag with ferrous oxide, which floats on the surface of molten steel, reducing the oxygen content in steel. The affinity between manganese and sulfur is also greater than that between iron and sulfur. When manganese sulfide is added to molten steel, it can be converted into slag to be discharged, thus reducing the sulfur content in steel, increasing the malleability and drawability of steel, and improving the strength and wear resistance of steel. As a deoxidizer, desulfurizer and alloy additive in steel, ferromanganese is one of the most used ferroalloys.
