Ferromanganese is an alloy of iron and manganese, with other elements such as silicon, carbon, sulfur, nitrogen, and phosphorus. The chemical properties of manganese are more active than those of iron. When manganese is added to molten steel, the oxygen content in the steel is reduced.
The properties of ferromanganese vary considerably with the precise type and composition of the alloy.

There are two methods for reducing ferromanganese: the flux method (also known as the low manganese slag method) and the flux-free method (the high manganese slag method). The principle of flux method is the same as blast furnace smelting, except that electric energy is used instead of coke for heating. High basicity slag (CaO/SiO2 is 1.3~1.6) is formed by adding lime to reduce manganese loss.
