During the steel production process, ferric phosphorus is produced as a by-product. It is skimmed off the top of the slag during the pig iron conversion process. The basic Bessemer process, also known as the Thomas process, was one of the first processes to perform this transformation. Ferrophosphorus is an iron alloy composed of iron and phosphorus. The phosphorus content determines the quality of the product, ranging from 23% to 32%.
Ferrophosphorus is a by-product of the steelmaking process and is the result of the transformation of pig iron, which is removed from the side that comes into contact with the slag produced in the process. It is also available as a by-product in phosphorus production.
The use of iron phosphorus is not a recent thing. Instead, it has been used as an alloying element in powder metallurgy since 1939. Sintered steel is alloyed with phosphorus iron, rather than unalloyed sintered steel, to increase strength. According to the latest development of iron phosphorus powder, sintered steel can have good ductility and high strength.
New alloys with optimal properties can be formed by adding ferrophosphorus to steel alloys. When iron phosphorus is added to an alloy, it prevents the metal from oxidizing and rusting.
