Ferrophosphorus is a symbiotic compound of iron and phosphorus, and usually contains a certain amount of trace elements such as silicon (Si) and carbon (C). Its chemical composition is usually expressed as the molecular formula FeP, but in fact the phosphorus content in ferrophosphorus can vary within a certain range. The common phosphorus content of ferrophosphorus is between 15.0% and 26%.

Ferrophosphorus is usually prepared by artificial smelting. In the smelting process, ore containing elements such as iron and phosphorus (such as apatite) is used as raw material, and reducing agents such as coke are added to smelt in a high-temperature smelting furnace. During the smelting process, the iron, phosphorus and other elements in the ore will be reduced and alloyed to form ferrophosphorus alloy. After that, the smelted ferrophosphorus alloy is cast into block or granular products of the desired shape. Ferrophosphorus has some unique physical properties. For example, the melting temperature of ferrophosphorus containing 18% to 25% phosphorus ranges from 1100 to 1250°C and the density is 5.8 to 6.5 g/cm³. In the steelmaking industry, ferrophosphorus is mainly used as a deoxidizer and alloying agent. It can effectively remove oxygen from steel and improve the quality of steel.
