Production of ferro silicon
In brief, the process can be described as follows: Iron ore (Fe2O3), quartz (SiO2), and carbon (C) in the form of coal, coke, and biocarbons are added to the top of the furnace. Three electrodes in the furnace heat the material. At about 2000˚C, carbon reacts with the oxygen in quartz, leaving liquid silicon.
The iron oxide in the iron ore pellets reacts with carbon through a similar reaction to form pure iron. The molten iron and silicon are mixed and then poured into ladles. The metal is cooled and crushed into fragments of different sizes to meet customer needs.
