While ferrosilicon's primary function in steel production involves oxygen removal, its applications now extend to precision alloy design. Modern electric arc furnaces (EAFs) utilize FeSi75 (75% Si) to control slag viscosity, enhancing sulfur removal efficiency by 30–40%. In advanced high-strength steels (AHSS), silicon modifies phase transformations, increasing tensile strength to 1.5 GPa without compromising ductility. A breakthrough lies in FeSi's role in grain boundary engineering. Adding 0.8–1.2% Si in TRIP steels promotes retained austenite stabilization, improving crash resistance in automotive components.
Furthermore, FeSi nanoparticles (50–100 nm) are being tested as nucleation agents in additive manufacturing, reducing porosity in 3D-printed tool steels by 60%. Environmental regulations are reshaping usage patterns: Japan's steelmakers now employ FeSi with ultra-low phosphorus (<0.02%) to meet JIS G2312 standards, while EU mills integrate FeSi-barium composites to reduce inclusion counts in ultra-low carbon steels.
