Production of FeSi Ferro Silicon
Ferro silicon can be produced by reducing sand or silica with coke and then reacting it with iron from scrap or mill scale. Ferro silicon with 15% silicon content can be produced from blast furnaces using acid-resistant bricks.
Another method to obtain this alloy is to use a submerged arc furnace to melt quartz, scrap steel, and reducing agents. The hot liquid alloy is then collected in a sand bed, cooled, and broken into smaller pieces. These pieces are further crushed to obtain the desired size.
A large amount of silica is required to prevent the formation of silicon carbide. Microsilicon is an important by-product obtained from this reaction.
Different silicon contents of Iron Silicon are available in the global market. Fe Silicon with 15%, 45%, 75%, and 90% silicon content can be found; the remainder is composed of iron. Other components like calcium and aluminum are present in about 2% quantity.
