the breif history of ferro silicon
In 1858, Shepard discovered a metal with a composition of 87.28% Fe, 11.01% Si in a meteorite and suggested the name ferrosilicon. In 1810 the Swede J. Betzelius J． Brezelius) smelts five kinds of ferrosilicon containing 2.2%~9.3% Si with iron filings, quartz stone and pine charcoal in the forging furnace. According to E. Davis. J． Davis) and A. Gate. D.Gate) reported that in 1872, the United States produced 6%~16% si ferrosilicon in the blast furnace of the Globe Iron and Steel Company. In 1875 A. Pulcell. Pourcel) in the blast furnace of Ternois, smelted ferrosilicon containing 10%~18% si. In 1899, DuCholmol smelted 25%~50% Si ferrosilicon in the electric furnace of Wilson Aluminum Company's Holcumrock plant in the United States, and obtained a U.S. patent. Later, the blast furnace was replaced by the electric arc furnace to produce ferrosilicon, and the production of 75% Si and 50% Si was the main ferrosilicon. Before the 50s of the 20th century, Chongqing in China tried to produce ferrosilicon with electric furnaces, and Anshan produced ferrosilicon in 400~1200kVA electric furnaces. In 1952, Fushun Aluminum Plant began to produce 75% Si ferrosilicon with a 6000kVA electric furnace. In 1956, Jilin Ferroalloy Factory began to use 12500kVA electric furnace to produce 45% Si ferrosilicon, and later produced: FeSi75.
Ferrosilicon production process
The production equipment of ferrosilicon is a submerged arc reduction electric furnace. The silicon content of ferrosilicon is controlled by the amount of iron raw materials. In addition to the selection of pure silica and reducing agent, the production of high-purity ferrosilicon should also be refined outside the furnace to reduce impurities such as aluminum, calcium, and carbon in the alloy.
