Vanadium-nitrogen alloy, also known as vanadium nitride, is a new alloy additive, which can replace ferrovanadium in the production of microalloyed steel. Vanadium-nitrogen alloy has two crystal structures: one is V3N with hexagonal crystal structure and extremely high hardness, and the other is VN with face-centered cubic crystal structure, both of which have high wear resistance.

Vanadium alloying can greatly improve the strength of carbon steel, especially under the technological conditions of quenching and tempering, the performance improvement is more obvious. Because a very small amount of vanadium can make steel obtain excellent properties, it is called "vitamin in steel".

Adding vanadium-nitrogen alloy to steel can improve the strength and toughness of steel and make steel have good weldability. For example, in the construction industry, the new tertiary steel bar produced by vanadium-nitrogen alloying technology not only enhances the safety and earthquake resistance of buildings, but also saves 10% ~ 15% of steel compared with the original secondary steel bar. In addition, the use of vanadium-nitrogen alloy also saves the addition of vanadium. Under the same strength condition, vanadium-nitrogen alloy can save 20-40% vanadium compared with ferrovanadium, which also greatly reduces the emission of waste gas such as carbon dioxide and sulfur dioxide, which not only saves resources, but also protects the environment.

The field of high strength low alloy steel (HSLA) is the most significant field in the application of vanadium, and it is also the field with the largest consumption at present. As an additive, vanadium nitride is widely used in steelmaking, which can significantly improve the comprehensive mechanical properties of steel such as strength, toughness, ductility and thermal fatigue resistance, and make steel have good weldability. At present, the industrialization technology of vanadium-nitrogen alloy in China exceeds the similar technology of Vametco Company in the United States, which shows that our equipment is few and simple, and the operation requirements are lower, but the stability of the machine is very strong.
