Iron, V2O5, aluminum and lime are mixed in an electric arc furnace. Like silicon, aluminum reduces the vanadium in V2O5 to vanadium metal. Vanadium metal dissolves into iron and forms a ferrovanadium alloy. The resulting ferrovanadium has a vanadium concentration between 70 and 85 percent.

The most common use of ferrovanadium powder is in steel production. In 2017, 94% of domestic vanadium consumption was used to produce steel alloys. Ferrovanadium and other vanadium alloys are used in carbon steel, alloy steel, high-strength steel, and HSLA (high-strength low-alloy) steel. These steels are then used to make automotive parts, pipes, tools, and more.
Adding ferrovanadium makes steel tougher, making it more resistant to temperature and twisting. The increase in strength is a result of the formation of vanadium carbide, which has a rigid crystal structure and finer grain size, making the steel less ductile. In addition to being added to the composition of steel, ferrovanadium can also be used as a coating on steel. When coated with ferrovanadium nitride, the wear resistance of steel increases by 30-50%.
