Metallurgical Product Description
Ferrovanadium is a ferroalloy composed of vanadium and iron. It is mainly used as an alloy additive in steelmaking. High-vanadium ferrovanadium is also used as an additive for non-ferrous alloys.
The main raw material for China's ferrovanadium production is vanadium-titanium magnetite. After beneficiation and enrichment, vanadium-containing pig iron is smelted through a blast furnace, and vanadium slag is extracted during the atomizing furnace or converter-blowing process. After the vanadium slag is crushed, sodium salt (soda ash, table salt, or anhydrous Glauber's salt) is added for sodium oxidation roasting to turn the vanadium into soluble sodium metavanadate (NaVO3). After leaching and purification, ammonium sulfate is added to precipitate polyvanadate. Ammonium [(NH4)2V6O16] is then melted by deamination and cast into flake-shaped vanadium pentoxide. In addition, vanadium pentoxide is also extracted directly from vanadium-containing iron concentrate or vanadium-containing carbonaceous shale through chemical treatment.

Thermite method
Aluminum is used as the reducing agent, and the bottom ignition method is used for smelting in a furnace barrel lined with an alkaline furnace. First, put a small part of the mixed charge into the reactor and ignite it. After the reaction starts, add the remaining materials one after another. It is usually used to smelt high-vanadium iron (containing 60-80% vanadium). The recovery rate is slightly lower than that of the silicon thermal method, about 90-95%.

Vanadium-containing high-strength low alloy steel (HSLA) is widely used in oil/gas pipelines, buildings, bridges, rails, pressure vessels, and carriages due to its high strength.
