Ferrovanadium 's play a important role in many fields:
Steel Industry: Primary use (85%) as a microalloying agent to enhance strength, toughness, and corrosion resistance in HSLA steels, tool steels, and pipelines.
Aerospace: Vanadium-rich alloys for jet engine components.
Energy Storage: Emerging use in vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFBs) for renewable energy systems.
Chemical Catalysts: Vanadium pentoxide (V₂O₅) derived from ferrovanadium is used in sulfuric acid production.
Ferrovanadium is produced via two primary methods:
1.Aluminothermic Reduction: Vanadium pentoxide (V₂O₅) is mixed with aluminum and iron scrap in a reactor. The exothermic reaction (1,800–2,000°C) yields molten FeV. This method achieves 80–85% vanadium recovery and is preferred for high-purity grades.
2.Silicon Reduction: Lower-cost process using ferrosilicon as a reductant, but produces alloys with higher impurity levels (e.g., FeV50).
3. Electro-Slag Remelting (ESR): Secondary refining to remove sulfur and oxygen for specialty grades.
