The Difference Between Ferrovanadium Nitride And Vanadium-nitrogen Alloy

Basic characteristics of Ferrovanadium Nitride: The main components of Ferrovanadium Nitride are vanadium, nitrogen, and iron, containing two metals, making it a true vanadium-nitrogen alloy. The product density can reach above 5.2G/cm³, with a vanadium-to-nitrogen ratio of up to 4.13, which is closer to the ideal vanadium-to-nitrogen ratio of 3.64 compared to vanadium nitride's 5.5. Application in multiple large-scale steel enterprises in China has proven that the addition rate is 0.5-0.7KG per ton of steel, which can save 12.5% of vanadium resources. Compared to adding ferrovanadium, the amount of vanadium added can be reduced by 50%.

Description
Chemical composition

Ferrovanadium nitride is an alloy containing vanadium, nitrogen and iron, usually containing 20% to 40% vanadium, 1.5% to 6% nitrogen and the balance iron. Vanadium-nitrogen alloy is a non-ferrous alloy, generally containing 40% to 80% vanadium and 2% to 8% nitrogen.

vanadium nitride

the production process

Ferrovanadium nitride is usually produced by electric arc furnace smelting. Ferrovanadium and silicon nitride or calcium nitride are added into the furnace and react at high temperature to produce ferrovanadium nitride. The production of vanadium-nitrogen alloy adopts carbothermal reduction method or calcium nitride reduction method, and vanadium and calcium nitride or silicon nitride are reduced at high temperature to produce vanadium-nitrogen alloy.

vanadium nitride

the performance

Ferrovanadium nitride has the characteristics of good corrosion resistance, high wear resistance, high hardness and poor ductility. However, vanadium-nitrogen alloys have the characteristics of low density, low melting point, good electrical conductivity and low thermal expansion coefficient.

the application field

Because ferrovanadium nitride has the characteristics of corrosion resistance, wear resistance and high hardness, it is widely used in the manufacture of wear-resistant materials in steel, mining, cement and other fields. Vanadium-nitrogen alloys are mainly used in steel metallurgy, electronics, chemical industry and other fields.
To sum up, although ferrovanadium nitride and vanadium-nitrogen alloy both contain vanadium and nitrogen, there are differences in their chemical composition, production technology, properties and application fields. Therefore, in practical application, it is necessary to select suitable materials according to specific conditions.
