Fundamental Concept

Electrolytic manganese is made by dissolving manganese ore (mainly pyrolusite, MnO₂, or rhodochrosite, MnCO₃) in sulfuric acid, purifying the resulting manganese sulfate (MnSO₄) solution to remove impurities, and then passing direct electric current through the solution so that Mn²⁺ ions are reduced to metallic manganese at the cathode.

Production Overview

Leaching – Ore reacts with H₂SO₄ to form MnSO₄ solution, releasing CO₂ (from carbonates) or SO₂ (from oxides).

Purification – Iron, aluminum, cobalt, nickel, lead, zinc, etc., are removed by precipitation (lime, sulfide) and filtration.

Electrowinning – Purified solution enters electrolytic cells:

Cathode: Stainless steel plate where Mn²⁺ + 2e⁻ → Mn (solid deposit).

Anode: Lead‑alloy grid where water oxidizes to O₂.

Conditions: 90–95 °C, MnSO₄ 35–45 g/L, H₂SO₄ 10–20 g/L, current density 200–500 A/m².

Harvesting – After 1–3 days, cathodes are removed and metallic manganese is stripped off as brittle flakes or briquettes.

Washing & Drying – Removes electrolyte residue; dried product is > 99.7 % Mn.
