Description

A magnesium ingot is a lump or bar of metallic material cast from magnesium metal. Magnesium is the eighth most abundant element in the earth's crust and one of the lightest metallic structural materials. Magnesium ingots are usually extracted from minerals such as magnesite (MgCO₃) or dolomite (CaMg(CO₃)₂) by electrolysis or thermal reduction.

Magnesium Ingot features

1. LIGHTWEIGHT: magnesium is the lightest structural metal, with a density of only 1.74 g/cm³, which is about 35% lighter than aluminium, making it ideal for application scenarios where weight reduction is required.

2. Strength and Rigidity: Despite being lighter, magnesium alloys have relatively high strength and rigidity, especially when alloyed, and their mechanical properties can be significantly improved.

3. Good machinability: magnesium ingots have excellent casting, machining and cutting properties, making it easy to manufacture complex parts.

4. Excellent vibration resistance: magnesium materials are well damped and can effectively absorb vibrations and shocks, so they are commonly used in parts that require vibration resistance.

5. Weak corrosion resistance: Pure magnesium has poor corrosion resistance, especially in wet or marine environments, so surface treatment or alloying with other metals is often required to enhance corrosion resistance.

Magnesium Ingot application

1. AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY: Magnesium ingots are commonly used in the manufacture of lightweight body parts such as wheel hubs, seat frames and dashboard mounts, which help to reduce the total vehicle weight and improve fuel efficiency.

2. Aerospace: Due to its light weight and good mechanical properties, magnesium ingots and magnesium alloys are used in structural parts of aircraft and spacecraft, such as fuselages and engine parts.

3. Electronics: magnesium alloys are commonly used in the housings of laptops, mobile phone cases and other portable electronic devices, providing lightweight, robust structural protection.

4. MEDICAL DEVICES: Biocompatible magnesium alloys are used in the manufacture of some implantable medical devices, such as bone nails, stents, etc., which are able to gradually degrade and be absorbed by the human body.

5. Military and other industries: Magnesium ingots are used in the manufacture of military vehicles, weaponry and other industrial equipment that require lightweight and impact resistance.

Overall, the lightweight nature of magnesium ingots allows for a wide range of potential applications in a number of high-end manufacturing areas, but in some cases alloying or surface treatments are required to overcome their lack of corrosion resistance.
