Magnesium is a silver-white metal with a density of 1.738g/m³ and a melting point of 648.9°C. The critical shear stress of a pure magnesium single crystal is about 4.8MPa. Magnesium is found in magnesite, dolomite, and carnallite, and contains approximately 12 billion pounds of magnesium per cubic mile of seawater. Magnesium is one of the ten most widely distributed elements in nature.
