Magnesium is a silver-white metal with a density of 1.738g/m³ and a melting point of 648.9°C.
The critical shear stress of a pure magnesium single crystal is about 4.8MPa. The strength and hardness of its polycrystalline are very low and cannot be directly used as structural materials. At room temperature, the magnesium surface interacts with oxygen in the atmosphere to form a magnesium oxide film. However, the film is brittle and not as dense as an aluminum oxide film, so its corrosion resistance is very poor.

The Pidgeon process is a typical method for producing magnesium metal. The raw materials required in this method include dolomite ore, fluorite, silica ore, coke, and scrap iron. The production time cycle of this method is about 10 hours. The Balzano method was developed based on the Pidgeon method, and the basic process flow is similar. However, this method can use an electric heater to heat it, which is a relatively energy-saving method.
