The raw materials of green silicon carbide mainly include petroleum coke and high-quality silica, and salt is added as an additive. These raw materials are smelted at high temperatures in a resistance furnace, usually at a high temperature of about 2200 C. After this process, the obtained green silicon carbide crystal has high purity and hardness, and its hardness is between corundum and diamond, and its mechanical strength is higher than corundum.
Green silicon carbide is a high-performance abrasive. Because of its high hardness and high wear resistance, it is often made into grinding wheels, abrasive belts, grinding discs, etc. for cutting, grinding and polishing metal and nonmetallic materials. In the field of high-precision processing such as semiconductors, ceramics and glass, green silicon carbide abrasive is favored because of its excellent performance. Green silicon carbide has a high melting point, low thermal expansion coefficient and excellent thermal shock resistance, so it is an ideal raw material for manufacturing refractories. It is often used to manufacture refractory bricks, refractory plates, etc. in high-temperature kilns, and as an additive for refractory castables and refractory coatings.
Green silicon carbide ceramics have the characteristics of high hardness, high strength, high thermal conductivity, low thermal expansion coefficient and excellent chemical stability, so they are widely used in the manufacture of ceramic tools, bearings, seals and so on. In addition, green silicon carbide can be compounded with other materials (such as metals and plastics) to make composite materials with excellent properties. In the photovoltaic industry, green silicon carbide is mainly used to manufacture substrates and mirrors of solar cells.
