Silicon is one of the semi-metals, formerly known as "silicon". The melting point is 1420°C and the density is 2.34g/cm3. Hard and brittle. Insoluble in acid at room temperature, easily soluble in alkali. The properties of metallic silicon are similar to those of germanium, lead, and tin, and have semiconductor properties. Silicon is extremely abundant in the earth's crust, second only to oxygen, accounting for more than a quarter of the total weight of the earth's crust, and exists in the form of silica or silicate. The purest silicon mineral is quartz or silica. Silicon has two allotropes: one is a dark brown amorphous powder, which is reactive and can burn in the air; the other is a stable crystal (crystalline silicon). Generally, silica and quartz are used in glass and other building materials, and high-quality quartz is used to make alloys, metals and single crystals.

Silicon metal is also a good component in aluminum alloys, and most cast aluminum alloys contain silicon. Silicon is the raw material for ultrapure silicon in the electronics industry. Electronic devices made of ultrapure semiconductor single crystal silicon have the advantages of small size, light weight, good reliability and long life. High-power transistors, rectifiers and solar cells made from silicon single crystals doped with specific trace amounts of impurities are better than those made from germanium single crystals. Research on amorphous silicon solar cells has progressed rapidly, and the conversion rate has reached more than 8%. The maximum operating temperature of the silicon molybdenum rod electric heating element can reach 1700°C, and its resistance is not easy to age and has good anti-oxidation properties. Trichlorosilane produced from silicon can be used to prepare hundreds of silicone lubricants and waterproofing compounds.
