Tungsten rods are produced from high-purity tungsten powder. The price of tungsten rod depends on the price of tungsten material.

Of all pure metals, tungsten has the highest melting point (3,422 °C, 6,192 °F), the lowest vapor pressure (temperatures above 1,650 °C, 3,000 °F), and the highest tensile strength.

Tungsten has the lowest coefficient of thermal expansion of any pure metal. Tungsten's low thermal expansion, high melting point, and strength result from the strong covalent bonds formed between tungsten atoms by 5d electrons. Adding a small amount of tungsten to steel can greatly improve its toughness.

Tungsten rods generally include: sintered rods, forged rods, and ground rods.
