Production Processes of Electrolytic Manganese Flake
Electrolytic manganese metal (EMM) flakes are primarily produced through hydrometallurgical processes, which involve leaching manganese ores, purifying solutions, and electrodeposition. Below are the key production methods: Traditional Sulfate-Based Electrolysis
Process Flow: Ore Pretreatment: Manganese carbonate or oxide ores (e.g., rhodochrosite, pyrolusite) are crushed and roasted to convert manganese into soluble Mn²⁺.
Acid Leaching: Treated ore is leached with sulfuric acid (H₂SO₄) to form manganese sulfate (MnSO₄) solution. Solution Purification: Impurities (Fe, Cu, Ni) are removed via pH adjustment, oxidation, or sulfide precipitation. Electrolysis: MnSO₄ solution is electrolyzed in cells with stainless steel cathodes and lead alloy anodes. Manganese deposits on cathodes as 99.7–99.9% pure sheets. Post-Treatment: Sheets are stripped, washed, dried, and trimmed. Advantages: Low cost, mature technology. Drawbacks: High energy consumption, SO₂ emissions from roasting, and acidic wastewater.
