During steelmaking, Fe-Si is typically added as a ladle addition along with ferromanganese (Fe-Mn). Both Si and Mn are important deoxidizers, desulfurizers, and alloying agents in steelmaking. Si is the primary deoxidizer and is more effective than Mn.
Modern steelmaking practices aim to maintain blast furnace availability as much as possible, thus utilizing heat under "open" conditions, relying primarily on ladle deoxidation. Fe-Si, Fe-Mn, and Si-Mn are used as the primary deoxidizers. The amount of Si added depends on the tapping temperature, the oxygen (O2) content of the steel water, and the desired residual Si level in the cast steel.
