Principle of ferrosilicon smelting

 

 

The principle of ferrosilicon smelting is as follows: Silicon dioxide is an oxide that is difficult to reduce, and its reduction process is relatively complicated. Many people have conducted extensive research on the reduction mechanism and thermodynamics of silicon dioxide. Although the reduction mechanisms they proposed are not exactly the same, one thing is recognized: when carbon is used as a reducing agent to reduce silicon monoxide, intermediate products silicon carbide and silicon monoxide are produced, and the generation and decomposition of silicon carbide and silicon monoxide play an important role in the entire reduction process of silicon dioxide. At lower temperatures, silicon dioxide reacts with carbon: Si02+3C=SiC+2C0. At higher temperatures, silicon dioxide is reduced to silicon monoxide by carbon: Si02+C=Si0+C0. Moreover, silicon carbide is destroyed at high temperatures due to the presence of silicon dioxide and silicon monoxide.

 

Since the reaction of silicon and iron to generate iron silicide is an exothermic reaction, it can reduce the theoretical starting reaction temperature of silicon dioxide reduction reaction. At the same time, the presence of iron can promote silicon to sink into the molten pool and leave the reaction zone, thereby improving the reduction conditions of silicon dioxide. The heat released by the reaction to generate ferrosilicide varies due to the different iron contents, so the starting reduction temperature of ferrosilicon with different silicon contents is also different. The lower the silicon content of the smelted ferrosilicon, the lower the theoretical starting reaction temperature for the reduction of silicon dioxide.
