Three special functions of titanium

(1) Shape memory function

It refers to the ability of Ti-50% Ni (atomic) alloy to restore its original shape under certain temperature conditions, and this material is called shape memory alloy.

(2) Superconductivity

Refers to NbTi alloy, when the temperature drops to close to absolute zero, the wire made of NbTi alloy will lose resistance, any large current will pass, the wire will not heat, no energy consumption, NbTi is called a superconducting material.

(3) Hydrogen storage function

Refers to Ti-50% Fe (atomic) alloy, which has the ability to absorb a large amount of hydrogen. This feature of TiFe allows hydrogen to be stored safely, i.e., it is not necessary to use steel high-pressure gas cylinders to store hydrogen. Under certain conditions, TiFe can also be allowed to release hydrogen, and TiFe is called an energy storage material.

1. Titanium is susceptible to oxidation at high temperatures

Titanium has strong binding force with hydrogen and oxygen, so attention should be paid to prevent oxidation and hydrogen absorption. Titanium welding should be carried out under the protection of argon to prevent pollution. Titanium tubes and thin plates should be heat treated under vacuum, and the micro-oxidation atmosphere should be controlled during the heat treatment of titanium forgings.

2. Low anti-damping performance

If a bell made of titanium or other metal materials (copper, steel) is exactly the same shape and size, and if you strike each bell with the same force, you will find that the sound of the bell made of titanium oscillates for a long time, that is, the energy given to the bell by striking it is not easy to disappear, so we say that the damping performance of titanium is low.
