The raw materials for industrial production of ferrotitanium include ilmenite concentrate (Fe-TiO3), rutile (TiO2), titanium dioxide (TiO2) and scrap titanium metal materials (Ti, Ti-V-Al, etc.), except for scrap titanium metal materials , must be reduced with a reducing agent to obtain ferrotitanium and titanium alloys.

 

TiO2 is a relatively difficult oxide to reduce. Reduction of TiO2 with carbon is only possible at high temperatures and produces TiC instead of Ti. High carbon ferrotitanium is obtained. It is impossible to reduce TiO2 with silicon, but adding CaO as a flux can promote the silicon reduction reaction. Titanium and silicon form stable silicides, which are beneficial to the silicon reduction reaction, but the ferrotitanium produced contains high silicon content. It is possible to reduce TiO2 with aluminum to produce Ti.

 

However, if the aluminum content is lower than the stoichiometric value, a large amount of TiO will be generated. TiO is more stable than TiO2 and cannot be reduced with aluminum. It is a strong alkaline oxide and can form slag with Al2O3 or SiO2. Therefore, CaO must be added to prevent the slagging reaction of TiO, and is also beneficial to the reduction of TiO2. Comparing the reactions in Figure 2, it is easier to reduce ilmenite (FeTiO3) with aluminum than to reduce TiO2, and adding CaO has the same effect.

 

Therefore, reducing ilmenite concentrate with aluminum is the main method for producing ferrotitanium. The resulting product has low carbon content but high aluminum and silicon content. Based on the above analysis, the main methods for producing ferrotitanium are thermite method, electrosilicothermal method and electrocarbothermal method, as well as the scrap titanium metal material remelting method.
