The production of ferrotitanium mainly adopts the reduction production process, of which the thermite method is widely used in the production of ordinary ferrotitanium, low aluminum ferrotitanium, medium ferrotitanium, and high ferrotitanium, while the carbothermal method can only produce high carbon ferroalloys. There are also remelting methods, molten salt electrolysis methods, etc. for producing high titanium iron.

The raw materials used to produce ferrotitanium and titanium metal include rutile, ilmenite, titanium magnetite, and ilmenite. China is very rich in titanium resources. There are titanium ore resources in more than 20 provinces and regions across the country, mainly distributed in Panxi, Sichuan, Chengde, Hebei, Yunnan, Hainan, Guangxi, and Guangdong.
