Description of Ferrotitanium

 

Ferrotitanium is widely used in metallurgical production. It can be used as a deoxidizer, denitrification agent, and alloy additive to improve the properties of cast iron. It is one of the raw materials for titanium-calcium type welding electrode coatings and is also used for basic components of some hydrogen storage alloys and magnetic materials.

 

Used as deoxidizer, desulfurizer, degassing agent, and alloying agent in steelmaking. It is added to steel as an alloying element during the steelmaking process to refine the structure grains, fix interstitial elements (C, N), and improve the strength of the steel.

Some methods of processing

 

The production of ferrotitanium mainly adopts the reduction production process, of which the thermite method is widely used in the production of ordinary ferrotitanium, low aluminum ferrotitanium, medium ferrotitanium, and high ferrotitanium, while the carbothermal method can only produce high carbon ferroalloys. There are also remelting methods, molten salt electrolysis methods, etc. for producing high titanium iron.

 

Remelting method

The remelting method uses scrap titanium or sponge titanium as raw material and adds iron to remelt it. This method generally uses induction furnace remelting. It is also used to smelt in a consumable electric arc furnace or use molten steel to mix sponge titanium to produce high titanium ferro. Titanium scrap and scrap steel are used as raw materials and remelted in an induction furnace to produce ferrotitanium with about 70% Ti (Fe-Ti system has a eutectic point at about 68% Ti). To reduce the burning loss of titanium during the remelting process, the titanium scrap is packed in a steel cylinder and pressed tightly. Add a mixture of barium chloride and sodium chloride, or cryolite, or a similar low melting point mixture as a flux to cover the titanium-iron melt. The remelting method can also produce various titanium composite alloys.

 

Thermite method

The thermite method is commonly used in the production of ferrotitanium. This method has a wide source of raw materials, low energy consumption, and low production costs. However, due to the high oxygen content, the low recovery rate of titanium, and the substandard content of impurity elements such as Al and Si, the use of this method to produce high titanium iron is restricted.
