Ferrovanadium is an iron alloy of vanadium and iron. Iron vanadium can be used as an element additive in smelting vanadium steel and alloy cast iron. As an alloying agent, vanadium can improve the strength, toughness, and wear resistance of steel, as well as the ability to withstand impact loads and corrosion resistance, 85% to 90% of iron vanadium is used in steel production. According to the vanadium content, iron vanadium can be divided into high vanadium ferroalloy and low iron vanadium. Usually, the vanadium content of vanadium ores is too low, difficult to produce iron vanadium directly from vanadium ores. Generally, vanadium pentoxide is produced first, and then iron vanadium is produced from vanadium pentoxide.

Ferrovanadium production methods mainly include the thermite method and direct alloying of vanadium slag, etc. The silicon thermal method can produce mid-range ferrovanadium and silicon ferrovanadium alloys, and the thermite method can produce high-quality ferrovanadium alloys. Thermite and electrothermal processes were developed to meet the needs of safe operation. Direct alloying of vanadium slag can save costs by eliminating the step of extracting vanadium from vanadium slag, but the product quality is lower due to the presence of C, Si, S, P, and Cr impurities. Generally speaking, the vanadium content in ferrovanadium is more than 40%. The melting point of the material is 1480°C, the solid density is 7.0t/m3, the bulk density is 3.3~3.9t/m3, and the block size used is <200.
