Ferrovanadium powder is a general-purpose hardener, strengthener and anti-corrosion additive for high-strength low-alloy (HSLA) steels, tool steels and other iron-based products.
The vanadium content in ferrovanadium dust varies from 45% to 50%, sometimes as high as 80%, depending on demand. Grades 45 to 50% are produced from slag and other vanadium-containing materials by silothermal reduction of pentoxide (V2O5) in the presence of scrap steel or by direct reduction in electric arc furnaces. The resulting vanadium steel can be divided into micro-alloyed or low-alloy steel with a vanadium content of less than 0.15% and high-alloy steel with a vanadium content of up to 5%.
Non-metallurgical applications include use as catalysts and in the ceramic, chemical, pigment, health care and electronic industries. It is also used to produce superconducting magnets with a magnetic field of 1,75,000 Gauss.
The most common vanadium oxide, vanadium pentoxide (V2O5), is used as a catalyst in making sulfuric acid. In biology, vanadium is a micronutrient that occurs naturally in mushrooms, shellfish, black pepper, parsley dill, cereals and cereal products
