Graphite Electrode Overview
Graphite electrodes are used in both DC and AC electric arc furnaces. Steelmaking workshops have to cover the cost of these consumable electrodes during the new steel production process. So optimizing the usage of graphite electrodes is a cost-saving tactic.
Graphite electrode performance parameters determine quality
Specific Resistance (SER or ER), The low specific resistance of graphite electrodes allows for maximum current carrying capacity without causing the electrode column to overheat.
Packing density or apparent density of graphite electrodes, with higher packing density usually reflected in improved mechanical properties.
Bending strength of graphite electrodes, the higher the bending strength of the electrode, usually results in a lower frequency of electrode fracture.
The tensile strength of the graphite electrode, the higher the tensile strength of the nipple, usually results in a lower frequency of nipple breakage.
Coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of graphite electrodes, with lower CTE generally providing better resistance to thermal shock. Furthermore, CTE compatibility between graphite electrodes and connecting joints is also important for satisfactory performance of the electrode joints.
