Ferro silicon is an alloy of iron and silicon (typically 15-90% Si), used mainly in steelmaking and casting. In contrast, silicon steel (also called electrical steel) is a specialized steel with a silicon content of 1-4.5%, designed for magnetic applications like transformers and motors. Silicon steel has high magnetic permeability and low core loss, making it ideal for electrical devices, whereas ferro silicon is valued for its deoxidizing and alloying properties in metallurgy.
Ferro silicon exhibits magnetic properties, but its magnetism depends on the silicon content. Alloys with lower silicon content (below ~15%) retain significant ferromagnetism due to the dominant iron phase. However, as silicon increases (e.g., 50-90% Si), the material becomes less magnetic or even non-magnetic because silicon reduces iron's magnetic permeability. High-purity ferro silicon with very high silicon content may behave more like pure silicon, which is non-magnetic.
