 What is SG (Specific Gravity)?

Specific Gravity (SG) is the ratio of the density of a substance to the density of water (at 4°C, where water density = 1 g/cm³).

Since the density of water is 1 g/cm³, SG ≈ density in g/cm³ (numerically).
So when we say the SG of FeSi is X, it also means its density is X g/cm³.

Typical Specific Gravity (SG) / Density of Ferrosilicon (FeSi)

Ferrosilicon Grade
Approx. Si Content
Approx. Density (g/cm³)
Approx. SG (Specific Gravity)
FeSi 45
40–47% Si
6.8 – 7.1 g/cm³
6.8 – 7.1
FeSi 65
60–67% Si
6.5 – 6.8 g/cm³
6.5 – 6.8
FeSi 75
72–78% Si
6.0 – 6.5 g/cm³
6.0 – 6.5 ✅ Most Common
FeSi 90
88–92% Si
5.5 – 6.0 g/cm³
5.5 – 6.0
For Ferrosilicon 75 (the most widely used grade), the typical SG is around 6.0 – 6.5 g/cm³

Why Does SG Vary with Silicon Content?

Iron (Fe) has a higher density (~7.87 g/cm³).
Silicon (Si) has a lower density (~2.33 g/cm³).
So, as the silicon percentage increases in the ferrosilicon alloy, the overall density decreases, and thus the SG becomes lower.

Quick Reference: Ferrosilicon 75 (Most Common Grade)

Property
Value
Grade
FeSi 75 (72–78% Si)
Density
6.0 – 6.5 g/cm³
Specific Gravity (SG)
6.0 – 6.5
Appearance
Grayish metallic lumps, granules, or powder
Iron Content
22–28%

 Practical Implications of SG

SG is important for:

Material handling (flow, bulk density)

Furnace charging calculations
Alloy dosing (knowing how much material by volume equates to a certain weight)

Transport and storage design

For example, if you're using FeSi 75 with SG = 6.2 g/cm³, then:

1 liter of FeSi 75 weighs ~6.2 kg

This helps in calculating how much alloy you're adding per batch in steel or foundry operations.

Final Answer:

The Specific Gravity (SG) of Ferrosilicon (FeSi) typically ranges from 5.5 to 7.1, depending on silicon content.

For Ferrosilicon 75 (the most common grade, with 72–78% silicon), the SG is around 6.0 – 6.5.

This also means its density is about 6.0 – 6.5 g/cm³.
