Aluminium wire rolling processes and materials
Aluminium alloy wire (aluminium wire) can be produced by hot rolling or extrusion, with diameters ranging from 8 (6) to 30 mm. The majority of this is produced by hot rolling, which accounts for about 26% of the total production of aluminium semi-finished products. Extrusion is more suitable for materials with higher alloying degrees and for small batches, since a simple die change is necessary to classify the different products.
The coiled aluminium wire is usually further formed by shrinking. There is no standard for the tolerance of aluminium wire, which should not exceed ± 0.5% and, when rounded off, a maximum of 50% of the tolerance is used.
The standards for rolled aluminium wire materials for electrical applications are special European standards such as EN 1715 [EAl 99.7 (1370)]; EAl MgSi (6101B); EAl Mg0.7Si (6201) and standards for cables (DIN 48200) and for wrought alloys (EN 573-4).
