Crystal structure of silicon carbide
Silicon carbide is an ordered pure substance with a diamond-like structure. Its crystal structure can be divided into two types: 4H-SiC and 6H-SiC. Among them, the 4H-SiC crystal structure is the most stable one, which is composed of regular hexahedral silicon atoms and octahedral carbon atoms arranged alternately, and has good electrical, mechanical and optical properties. The 6H-SiC crystal structure is composed of double hexahedral silicon atoms and double octahedral carbon atoms arranged alternately. It is slightly less stable than the 4H-SiC structure, but it also has important uses in certain specific application fields.
Silicon carbide has many excellent physical properties. Its hardness and elastic modulus are relatively high, about 85% of diamond and three times that of tungsten steel. At the same time, the thermal conductivity of silicon carbide is close to that of copper, the thermal expansion coefficient is relatively small, the mechanical strength is high, and it has excellent heat resistance, radiation resistance and corrosion resistance. In addition, silicon carbide has a large energy gap, a wide spectral range, and less interference, making it suitable for a variety of optical and electronic applications.
