Metallic silicon, also known as industrial silicon, has a silicon content of about 99%, and the rest impurities are Fe, Al and Ca. According to the strict classification of chemical elements, silicon is a nonmetallic substance. From the demand point of view, the main consumption areas of metallic silicon are silicone, polysilicon and aluminum alloy.

Metal silicon has semiconductor properties. It has no conductivity below 650℃, so it can be used as insulating material. When it exceeds 650℃, it will produce conductivity, and then its conductivity will increase with the increase of temperature. Therefore, metallic silicon can be used for photovoltaic power generation and making semiconductor materials.

Silicone is the largest field of metal silicon consumption at present, with the richest product types, which are widely used in many industries such as building materials, electronic appliances and daily chemical textiles. Silicon can also be used in the form of alloy. At present, it is mainly made of silicon-aluminum alloy. Because of its good formability and high corrosion resistance, it is often used as automobile (accounting for more than 60% of the consumption of cast aluminum alloy), aerospace, ships and other parts. However, since automobile consumption is now entering a period of steady growth, the demand for silicon-aluminum alloy is far less than that of silicone and polysilicon.

In recent years, thanks to the development of silicone and polysilicon industry, the global demand for silicon is on the rise. Since 2011, China has become the largest producer and consumer of metallic silicon in the world.
