High Purity Silicon Metal 2202

Silicon metal 2202 is directly used in the aluminum and steel industries (as an additive) or as a precursor for producing higher purity grades of silicon materials, such as solar grade silicon (sog-si) and electronic grade silicon (eg-si). Therefore, higher grade silicon is the product of refining lower grade silicon (mg-si) into higher purity.

The refining process of silicon metal 2202 is a post purification process that involves two main pathways: chemical and metallurgical.

One of the main methods for producing silicon metal 2202 is based on the carbon thermal reduction of silicon dioxide at high temperatures. This can be achieved by reducing silica in the presence of carbon in an electric arc furnace. The conventional method relies on direct reduction of silica to silicon under environmental pressure, where high-temperature arc heating of reactants forms silicon. The silicon product produced by this method is also known as metallurgical grade silicon (mg-si), with a maximum purity of no more than 98-99%.
