Metal silicon, a nonmetal and semiconductor, is a hard, brittle crystalline solid with a blue-grey metallic luster.

Silicon contracts in its liquid state while expanding as it solidifies, and is relatively inactive at ordinary temperatures. However, when heated it reacts vigorously with the halogens (fluorine, chlorine, bromine, and iodine) to form halides and with certain metals to form silicides.
The melting and boiling points of the silicon metal are 1414 °C and 3265 °C, respectively, and are the second highest among all the metalloids and nonmetals, being surpassed only by boron.
