Silicon barium (Silicon barium alloy) is an iron alloy consisting of silicon (Si) and barium (Ba), which is widely used in the iron and steel metallurgy and foundry industries. It is mainly used as a deoxidising agent, desulphurising agent and inoculant in the steelmaking and casting process, and can significantly improve the quality of steel and cast iron.

- Composition: Silicon barium alloys are mainly composed of silicon and barium, with a silicon content of 10-40% and a barium content of 10-25%, in addition to small amounts of calcium, aluminium, iron and other elements.
- Appearance: Silicon barium alloys are generally in the form of lumps or grains, and are silvery grey or dark grey in colour.
- Density: Approximately 4.5-5.0 g/cm³, depending on barium content.
- Melting point: Silicon barium alloys have a relatively low melting point, usually between 1200-1350°C.
Silicon Barium applications
1. Steelmaking industry
- Deoxidiser: Silicon and barium in Silicon-Barium alloy can react with oxygen in steel during the steelmaking process to generate oxides and float to the surface of steel, thus effectively removing oxygen from steel and preventing oxide inclusions in steel.
- Desulphurising agent: Barium element has strong desulphurising ability and can generate barium sulphide (BaS) with the sulphur in the molten steel, thus reducing the sulphur content in the molten steel and improving the toughness and corrosion resistance of the steel.
2. Foundry industry
- Inoculant: In the casting process, silicon barium alloy is used as an inoculant, which can promote the nucleation of graphite in cast iron, refine the grain, improve the mechanical properties of cast iron, and prevent the casting from defects such as shrinkage holes and shrinkage loosening.
- Modifier: Silicon barium alloy can also be used as a modifier for cast iron, which can adjust the microstructure of cast iron and improve the wear resistance and toughness of castings.
3. Special alloy materials
- In the production process of certain special alloy materials, barium silicon alloy can be used as an additive to adjust the composition and properties of the alloy.
Preparation of silicon barium
Silicon barium alloys are usually produced by electric furnace smelting. The main raw materials include silica, barium ore and reducing agents (such as coke). At high temperatures, silicon dioxide (SiO₂) in silica and barium compounds in barium ore are reduced to form silicon and barium, which combine with iron to form silicon-barium alloys.
