High-carbon silicon is a ferrosilicon alloy with a high carbon content, usually consisting of iron, silicon and carbon. It is widely used in the steelmaking and foundry industries, and is particularly important as a reducing and alloying agent.

 

Physical and chemical properties


- Composition: The main component of high carbon silicon is silicon (Si), which is usually around 60-70%, with a higher content of carbon (C), usually between 6-8%, and the remainder being iron and other trace elements.
- Appearance: Usually lumpy or granular, grey or black in colour.
- Density: about 3.2-3.5 g/cm³.
- Melting point: The melting point of high carbon silicon is about 1350-1450°C, which decreases with the increase of carbon content.

High carbon Silicon Applications

 

1. Steel making industry
- Deoxidiser: High carbon silicon is commonly used as a deoxidiser in the steelmaking process, which can effectively remove oxygen from the steel, reduce the oxygen content in the steel and improve the quality and purity of the steel.
- Carbon Enhancer: Due to its high carbon content, High Carbon Silicon can also be used as a carbon enhancer to regulate the carbon content of the steel and improve the strength and hardness of the steel.

2. FOUNDRY INDUSTRY
- Inoculant: High-carbon silicon is used as an inoculant in the casting process, which helps to improve the organisational structure of cast iron, prevent defects such as shrinkage holes and shrinkage loosening from appearing in the castings, and enhance the mechanical properties of the castings.
- Reducing agent: In the smelting process, high carbon silicon can be used as a reducing agent to help reduce the oxygen content in the metal oxides and increase the metal yield.

3. Metallurgical Industry
- Alloying agent: High-carbon silicon is used as an alloying additive in the metallurgical industry, which can regulate the alloy composition and improve the wear resistance, corrosion resistance and toughness of the materials.

High-carbon silicon is usually produced by electric furnace smelting. The main raw materials include silica, coke or coal. Through high-temperature smelting, the silica in silica is reduced to produce silicon, and the carbon in coke participates in the reaction as a reducing agent, ultimately producing ferrosilicon alloys with high carbon content.
