Silicon nitride (Si3N4) is an inorganic substance composed of silicon and nitrogen, with the chemical formula Si3N4. It is an important structural ceramic material. It has two main crystal forms: α-Si3N4 and β-Si3N4. The former is granular crystal and the latter is needle-shaped crystal. Both belong to the hexagonal system.

Silicon nitride has high hardness, second only to diamond and cubic boron nitride, and has extremely high bending strength. Silicon nitride itself has lubricity, low friction coefficient and wear resistance. Silicon nitride has excellent thermal stability and strong oxidation resistance. The thermal oxidation resistance temperature can reach 1400℃, the operating temperature can reach 1200℃, and the operating temperature can reach 1800℃ in a neutral or reducing atmosphere. In addition, silicon nitride has low thermal expansion and can be used in extremely cold and hot working environments.
